What is a call to action?

Think of a call to action like a suggestion or like a recommendation. The point of it is to make a user do a desired action. Now there are many examples out there and some of them are indirect and hard to notice. Lets look at a small list of direct CTA’s.


  • Button.
    • The button could say, purchase, or subscribe.
    • The button could also use different colors to influence people’s moods.
  • Link.
    • The most common is “click here to learn more”
    • Another one could be a link to a review for a product.

when a user lands on a webpage, the main goal is to get the user to do something, and that’s were a CTA can come to action. Some call to actions work by creating a sense of urgency, while other are subtle and indirect.


How to make effective call to actions.

making an effective CTA can actually be challenging, because it isn’t just putting a button on a webpage. To make a CTA effective you need to give it some color, and put it in a area where the user will see it. Now the type of CTA will decide the effectiveness of the call to action. If your trying to get people to subscribe to a news letter, a button could do well. However if your writing a review for a product for a company, a combination of CTA’s could be used. You could use a mix of indirect links and a button.
