Why is good communication and question asking important

Having good communication when talking to a web developer can help insure that the work is done efficiently without hiccups. Understanding how to communicate can reduce the time it takes to get the website done, and when the client and the developer are on the same page, everyone has a good time.

However it’s also important to mention that when a question is asked, it should be direct and not broad. For example, “I don’t really like the design of the page, could you make some improvements?”. First off, in this case, I am not told what is bothering the client, and second, it’s not constructive. While on the other hand, “I don’t really like the way these two colors mix on the header, Could you try another color?”. with this scenario, I was given direction towards the problem, and it’s a simple fix, whereas the other example, I could change a whole load of things before I figure out what was wrong.

If someone is critiquing your work, wouldn’t you want that criticism to be constructive? I would, and it’s a simple explanation too. It tells me were the problem is, and being constructive may bring up ideas I haven’t thought of. Here’s some things to think about.

  • Be Specific: Instead of comments, give the developer examples or instances that demonstrate your points. This helps the developer understand what needs improvement.
  • Be Constructive, Not Destructive: Your feedback should be aimed at helping the person fix the problem and improve the site, not at tearing them down.
  • Offer Solutions: With pointing out what needs improvement, suggest ways to fix the issue. This shows that you are invested in helping the developer make your website good.
  • Be Sensitive to the developer’s Feelings: Receiving criticism can be difficult. Be mindful of the recipient’s emotional feelings and approach the conversation with empathy.

Dealing with pop-up questions

pop-up questions are very common, “How would my site look with this”, “what if we try this”. These question are important, as the client wants to see what they like, and looks better. It’s important to also mention certain things thing the client may not understand, for example, certain colors can affect the mood of a person, thus changing the user conversion rate.

Asking questions

At some point, your going to want to ask the developer a question. Now lets look at some things that can help you get your point across.

  • Be Clear and Direct: Make sure your question is clear. Avoid anything that could lead to confusion or a misunderstanding.
  • Be Respectful: Always be respectful when asking questions. This is especially important in professional settings or when dealing with sensitive topics.
  • Be Open-Minded: Approach questions with an open mind, ready to listen to the answers. This encourages a more productive environment.
  • Listen Actively: When asking a question, also listen actively to the answer. This shows that you value the information being shared.
  • Ask for Clarification: If something is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification.
  • Follow Up: If the initial answer doesn’t fully address your question, don’t hesitate to follow up with another question.

Asking questions can help better personalize your website to your business. It can also help you gain an understanding of how your website works, and better ways you could attract customers. Another thing to remember, if something doesn’t look right, ask a question about it.
